How to care for your orchid?

The ideal sunlight for orchid care

A few tips and tricks

To care for an orchid properly, it’s important to inquire about the variety at the time of purchase to determine the appropriate temperature. There are three types: cold orchids, temperate varieties, and warm orchids.

Orchids need to be watered regularly but not excessively, otherwise, you risk causing the roots to rot. To avoid issues, opt for a humidifying technique rather than flooding the soil. It’s also recommended to mist the leaves to prevent them from drying out. If the water in your area is hard, use collected rainwater. Additionally, to care for your orchid, never leave stagnant water at the bottom of the pot.

Water your orchid according to the seasons:

  • In spring and summer: water your orchid 1 to 2 times per week.
  • In autumn and winter, reduce watering to once every 15 days.

If your plant is covered with dust, the leaves should be cleaned. Simply wipe them with a damp cloth. For proper orchid care, avoid using “plant shine” products in spray cans as they can do more harm than good.

Make an orchid
bloom again

Orchids are highly valued for their blooming. This majestic plant blooms at least twice a year, and at least two months after the last flower fades.

Here are a few tips to care for the flowers of your plant:

  • If it’s the first bloom: cut the stem with the faded flowers just above the second node.
  • If it’s already the second bloom, cut the stem with the faded flowers short.
In both cases, cutting the stem stimulates your orchid and allows a faster new formation, resulting in a new bloom. Exception: for some rare orchid varieties like the monkey orchid, there is only one blooming period from spring to fall.
